Custom Inlay
I offer custom inlay work on my production guitars. Inlay is one
of the areas I pride myself on and I'm always pushing myself
to go further.
I use only "real" inlay materials: Abalone, Mother of Pearl (MOP),
stone, gold, silver, etc.. All HEL guitars come with, at minimum,
MOP fretboard dots and side-marker dots. (the only exception
being fretboards with white or cream binding, as black plastic
dots are the most effective in this situation. White plastic side
dots may also be installed in place of MOP or Abalone at the
request of the customer, as, in certain lighting situations, it may
be harder to see these as compared to white plastic)
In any case, you will NOT find Mother of Toilet Seat being used
for inlay materials on any of my guitars. (if you do not know
what MOTS is... just google it.. and you will see the shame of
some of the major manufactures that bought into it.)
Custom inlaid fretboards.
For those who wish to build their own guitars, I will also make and
inlay a fretboard to the exact specifications supplied. Any wood
species (suitable for fretboards, that is) is possible as I have the
ability to re-saw large billets into multiple fretboards, thus saving
the customer money in the process.
I can also inlay pre-radiused fretboards bought from guitar
suppliers, however, I prefer to start with a blank slate.
Replacing inlays on used or vintage guitars:
I can also install custom inlays on existing instruments..
HOWEVER.. the following rules apply.
1) I WILL NOT inlay a guitar neck with the frets still installed. If you want a custom inlay job on your guitar, the frets must be removed
and the board sanded flat before any work can begin.
2) I WILL NOT remove the frets from your instrument. This falls under the category of "repair" and I have an agreement with Greg
at BCR Music in Lemoyne PA that I will NOT conduct any fretwork for "civilians" unless contracted by BCR to do so. (see the
disclaimer in the "repairs" section)
THEREFORE, if you want custom inlay work done on your existing guitar, you have two options:
1) You can take the guitar to BCR and contract with them for the fret-removal and installation of new frets. BCR will hand the
instrument over to me when the frets are re-moved and the board leveled. I will then complete the inlay work and return the guitar to
BCR for fret installation and setup.
2) You can remove the frets yourself, and hand the instrument to me for the board leveling and inlay work. HOWEVER.. if you do
not know what you are doing, I HIGHLY suggest that you choose option 1. Repair shops tend to charge more to repair things that
have been destroyed by people who botched a job because of inexperience than of you just bring it to them in the first place!
REPAIRS
H.E.L. Guitars:
I will stand behind every instrument I produce for quality of workmanship. If the instrument needs repair caused by a defect in
manufacture, I will fix it.... to the point of building a new
instrument.
I will not be responsible, however, for damage caused to the instrument by the owner, a fan, a disgruntled girlfriend or another
shop.
I will, also, not be responsible for the failure of electronic devices past the original warranty date. This is to include pickups and
any active or passive booster or EQ devices installed in the guitar.
I will however, replace, at no charge, faulty pots or switches (not attached to the circuit boards and /or supplied with active pickup
sets) for a period of one year after the date of sale.
That being said, if you DO happen to mung up your instrument through some freak accident, act of god or rage of a jilted lover,
please call me. As the builder, I will have a better idea of how to fix it than someone who has never seen it before. I will also take
into
account that you bought the guitar from me when quoting repair costs.
All Other Guitars: (except vintage SG's that you might want to sell)
I am NOT a repair shop. I will service the guitars that I have built, however, I will not perform contract repair services. I am a custom
luthier, and that, in itself, takes up as much of my time as my girlfriend will allow at the moment. (not to mention the liability
insurance on my shop.....)
If you have an instrument that needs repair, Please call or stop by:

Greg Platzer, owner, has been wrenchin' on guitars for over 25 years and has the expertise to do the job right the first time. At any
given time, you are liable to find the guitar of a well known artist on Greg's bench, or someone blowin' through town has brought
something by to get
tweaked.
Kurt Schneck, while maybe not as flamboyant, charming, quick witted and as concerned about personal hygiene as Mr. Platzer, is
quite the capable repair man himself, and when Greg lets him out of his cage, he can be found Tec'n for the likes of Linkin' Park,
and previously, Godsmack!
Greg has taught me many, many nifty things about guitar repair andconstruction and I learn something else every time I drop by.
Building guitars is one thing.. I get to work with pristine woods, new metals and clean shiny control pots, fixing someone else's
shoddy work, rusted gear or downright guitar blasphemy...... that's a whole art unto itself!!!!!!!
